Privacy Policy
Berean Studios LLC ("Berean Studios," "we," "us") makes the Behold Bible Study app for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. This policy explains what data the app and our website collect, how it is stored, and the choices you have over it.
1. Data the Behold app handles
Berean Studios does not collect or receive any of the study data you create in Behold. Everything you write in the app — highlights, notes, prayer requests, memorization cards, studies — stays under your control. This section describes where that data lives so you understand the privacy picture end-to-end.
What you create in the app
When you use Behold, you create personal study material:
- Highlights and notes you write on Bible verses (including any voice memos or pencil ink you attach)
- Prayer requests, including any answer notes
- Memorization cards and your review history
- Inductive and topical studies, including stages, observations, cross-references, and entities you link
- Reading-plan progress and reading streak
- App preferences (font size, default translation, notification settings, etc.)
Where it lives
- On your device: as files inside the app's private data directory. These files are included in your device backup if you back up to iCloud or to a Mac.
- In your private iCloud database (CloudKit): if you are signed in to iCloud, the same records sync to your private iCloud container so they appear on your other Apple devices signed in with the same Apple ID. Berean Studios cannot read this iCloud data. CloudKit's private database is end-user-scoped — only Apple's infrastructure and your own devices can access it. We do not have an admin view, an export tool, or a backdoor.
What we do NOT collect
- We do not run analytics, telemetry, or crash reporting tied to a personal identifier. The app does not include Firebase, Mixpanel, Sentry, or similar SDKs.
- We do not collect your location, contacts, photos, or microphone audio outside of the voice-memo feature you explicitly trigger (and those memos stay in your private iCloud database).
- We do not show ads or use any advertising identifiers.
- We do not sell, rent, or share your data.
2. Subscriptions and purchases
Behold offers an optional subscription called "The Berean" that unlocks image-based content. Apple handles all payment processing, billing, and subscription management. We receive only the entitlement signal needed to know whether your current Apple ID has an active subscription. We do not see your payment method, billing address, full Apple ID, or purchase history beyond that entitlement.
You can manage or cancel your subscription anytime in Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions on your Apple device.
3. Bible translations
Behold ships with the King James Version (KJV) and other public-domain translations bundled inside the app. If you choose a translation provided by API.bible (such as ASV, LSV, NASB, NKJV, BSB), the app fetches that translation's text from API.bible's servers. API.bible operates under its own privacy policy. We do not send your highlights, notes, or any personal data to API.bible — only the verse references your reader is currently displaying.
4. Spotlight search
Behold indexes some app content (Bible chapters, study tools) into Apple's Spotlight system search index so you can find them from the device home screen. The Spotlight index lives on your device only; nothing is uploaded.
5. What we collect on beholden.app
The Behold marketing site uses Vercel Web Analytics and Speed Insights to measure aggregate page-view counts and load times. These tools are configured to be cookie-less and to not track individual visitors. We do not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any third-party advertising trackers.
6. Children
Behold is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If a parent or guardian believes their child has provided us with information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
7. Your rights and choices
- Access and export. Because all your study data lives on your device and in your private iCloud database, you already have full access to it. You can export annotation data through the in-app reports view in Settings.
- Deletion. To delete app data on your device, uninstall Behold. To delete the iCloud copies, sign in to iCloud on a device with Behold installed, then in Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Behold, choose Delete Data.
- Correction. All data you create is editable in the app at any time.
- California (CCPA) and EEA/UK (GDPR) residents: the rights described above are how we satisfy access, deletion, and portability requests. We are not a "selling" or "sharing" business under CCPA. If you have additional questions, contact us at the email below.
8. Security
On-device data is protected by iOS/iPadOS/macOS file-system encryption when your device is locked. iCloud data is protected by Apple's CloudKit encryption-at-rest. Network calls to API.bible use TLS. We do not operate our own servers that hold user content.
9. Changes to this policy
If we update this policy in a way that materially changes how we handle your data, we will revise the "Effective" date at the top and, for substantive changes, post a notice on this page for at least 30 days. Continued use of Behold after a change indicates your acceptance.
